Highlights of how Roys has helped charities in 2020

How we helped charities & communities in 2020

During 2020 Roys is pleased to have been able to help a large number of charities and good causes both locally and nationally. The total number of causes Roys has been able to help is 143, ranging from air ambulances to rescued animals and everything in between. Around half of the causes helped were through raffle prize donations, meaning many of the donations will have hopefully gone on to help raise even more money for charity.

In total we've raised over £33,000 through our MADL donations, plastic bag charges, raffle prize donations & other money raising such as wearing fancy dress on special days & in store collections.

The 5p plastic bag charge has raised £15,692, going to several charities. Our stores have different charities of the year voted on by the staff and those charities will receive a donation equal to the amount that store has raised. In total 10 charities will receive the following donations; £4939.91 to Faith Animal Rescue (raised by our Wroxham Food Hall, fuel station, DIY Centre, head office and Norwich distribution centre), £1950.20 to Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (raised by our Wroxham Department Store, Garden Centre and Roys Toys), £3617.54 to the Friends of Harford Manor School (raised by our Bowthorpe store), £917.31 to Beccles Lions Club (raised by our Beccles store), £374.62 to St Martin's House (raised by our Dereham store), £1264.50 to Norfolk & Waveney MIND (raised by our Magdalen Street store), £357.35 to Friends of Horsey Seals (raised by our North Walsham store), £900.43 to The Bridge Project (raised by our Sudbury store), £968.97 to Nelson's Journey (raised by our Thetford store) and £401.33 to East Anglian Air Ambulance (raised by our Highway store).

Our Making A Difference Locally Fund (MADL) has helped 24 great causes with donations ranging from £100 to £1,000. In this scheme money is put into Roys' MADL fund based on sales of selected grocery products sold in Roys stores and then used to help local charities and good causes. Donations from this scheme include; £1000 to Priscilla Bacon Lodge new hospice appeal, £500 to Sea Palling Lifeboats, £1000 to Norman Lamb's mental health charity, and, £500 each to Wroxham & Hoveton Good Neigbour Scheme foodbank and Falcon Junior School foodbank.

In store actions have raised nearly £5,000, with staff and customers coming together to help several great charities. Much of this money comes from collection pots in store, but events such as Children in Need (£1,206), Christmas Jumper Day (£489 to Save The Children) and Wear It Pink (£285 to Breast Cancer Now) are also very significant.

The safety of our customers and staff is paramount to us here at Highway which is why we have taken all safety measures possible. We ask that everyone over the age of 11 wears a face covering, this includes our elves and even Santa! You will be asked to sanitise your hands before entering the grotto or restaurant. Social distancing will be in place throughout the whole experience. Santa will be separated by a natural present barrier in the grotto and will remain at a safe distance in the restaurant events. Only household and support bubbles are permitted to enter the grotto or sit at a table together in Breakfast with Santa or Afternoon Tea.

We are allowing a maximum of 6 people, this includes a maximum of 3 adults. You only need to book for children, however please note we will not permit more than 6 people (including 3 adults) in. These people must all be from the same household or support bubble. If we believe your party is not from one household or support bubble then we may ask you to leave.

If your household includes maximum of 3 adults and more than 3 children then we will permit you to enter the grotto, however if we believe your party of over 6 is not from one household or support bubble then we may ask you to leave. If you are trying to book for more than 3 children in one slot and the spaces are unavailable then please contact us via email and we may be able to assist you.

Santa will give each child a special gift. In the grotto the gift will be delivered via a slide from Santa's side of the barrier to your side. In breakfast with Santa and Afternoon Tea with Santa your present will be delivered to you at your table.

To ensure the safety of all our visitors we have made the difficult decision for these events to not include a trip to the grotto. You will still get to spend quality time with Santa at your table and receive your special gift.

We have tried to minimise the time for you to queue, it will take a short while for you to walk through the enchanted wood and you may need to wait to a few minutes while the family in front of you visits Santa. To keep queuing down to the smallest amount of time we strongly advise that you only queue at the time of your slot and no earlier. 

If you would like to bring a young baby along with another sibling and would not like a gift from Santa then you do not need to book for the baby. If you would like them to receive a gift then please book a ticket. Gifts are available for all ages.

If you are able to print off your ticket confirmation then please do, however we will also accept a copy of it on your phone.

We have made sure we have lots of room for manoeuvrability and we welcome wheelchairs, prams and pushchairs, however in certain areas the floor may be slightly uneven. There is quite a steep slope to access the grotto, when you arrive please do speak with a member of staff who will be able to ask a friendly elf to show you to a more accessible entrance. Remember you are exploring an enchanted forest so wear sensible shoes!

As per Government Guidance all persons over 11 years of age must wear a mask or face covering in any of our buildings including meeting Santa unless they have proof of exemption. You will need to wear a mask at all times in the restaurant unless you are sat at your table

If a member of your household or support bubble tests positive for Covid 19 then unfortunately you will not be able to visit us to see Santa. Please let us know as soon as you can and we will refund your booking in full, you can of course book again if there are slots available once your household or support bubble are all well with no positive cases.

If a member of your household or support bubble is in isolation from being a close contact of someone that has tested positive for Covid 19 then you need to let us know and we can refund you the price of that persons ticket. Any remaining members of your household or support bubble that are not in isolation may still visit.

If we receive any further Government Guidance that advises us to close the grotto or restaurant then we will contact anyone that has made a booking and give a full refund.

We would love for you to take photos on your visit! Santa is definitely not camera shy and would love to get his photo taken, we have even made a special area for your children to stand in the grotto so Santa can be seen behind the children!

Please let us know in the comments box if you have any dietary requirements such as vegan, vegetarian, dairy free or gluten intolerant.

We would love for you to be able to do a spot of shopping after seeing Santa. On busy days you may be needed to queue to get into the department store, December is always a busy time for us and we need to make sure every one is safe and has enough room to social distance. If the store is quiet you will be able to enter the store without the need to queue. There will be a short amount of time after Afternoon Tea with Santa before the store closes.
